Produced for the celebration of Thomas Chippendale Snr’s tercentenary of his birth in 1718 the music stand below is both functional and a sculptural object. It is one of a suite of music stands that have been individually designed and carved, presented by the Master Carvers’ Association for exhibition and recital performances.
A piece combining the proverb dating from the16th century: 'You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear'
and a modern expression: 'You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig'.
It is neither of these,
it is lime wood, 23.5 ct gold leaf and red paint.

The River Ouzel runs from its source in the Chilterns for twenty miles north to Newport Pagnall where it flows into the Great Ouze. In Leighton Buzzard it runs beside the Grand Union Canal where at the Twelve Arches weir in Linslade the overflow from the canal deposits into the river and its flood plains.
In the 10th century Leighton Buzzard was a frontier town with the River Ouzel forming the border between Wessex and Danelaw. At Yttingaford, now known as Tiddenfoot the ancient salt route called Theedway crossed the Ouzel. It was here in 906 that the Anglo-Saxon King Edward the Elder signed a peace treaty with the Danes. The river continued to be a border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire until 1965 when the boundery was moved to unite the towns of Leighton Buzzard and Linslade.
Walking through the ancient landscapes along the Ouzel has given me the inspiration to produce a continuing series of paintings.
