About Me

I established The Paul Ferguson Workshop in 1978 following five years of design studies at art school and a further five years of wood carving training at The Paul Levi Studio in Paddington, London, under the supervision of master carver Edward Desave.

In 2012 the workshop was incorporated as Fine Wood Carving & Gilding Ltd. On taking semi-retirement in 2022 the company was voluntarily dissolved. I gave up my commercial premises and set up a garden studio to continue to work on smaller projects and to compliment my painting studio. I now trade under my own name.

Clients have included Royal Palaces, stately homes, art galleries, government buildings, public museums, churches, architects, the antiques trade, interior designers, fashion designers as well as private individuals.

In 2007 I was awarded accreditation as a conservator with the Institute of Conservation. I am listed on the Conservation Register.

I am a member of the Master Carvers Association (established 1897). From 1992 – 2017 I served as Honorary Secretary and from 1999 – 2001 I was elected President, the only person to hold both positions concurrently in the Association’s long history.

As Chair of the National Working Group for Carving, established 2012, under the auspices of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), I contributed to the development of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for wood and stone carving.

In the 2018 New Years’ Honours List I was awarded the MBE for services to carving, gilding and conservation.

I am proud to be a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Turners.

In semi-retirement I specialise in restoration and conservation, writing comprehensive reports, analyses, treatment proposals and method statements with final documentation including photographic records of progress.

As mentioned above I now work on smaller projects, welcoming  new commissions in wood carving and gilding both studio based and at onsite locations. My extensive experience enables to deliver projects to the highest standards, both traditional and contemporary. Services include consultation, sketches and CAD drawings as required.

My journey into painting and wood sculpture continues.
